General Motors announced that it will be removing the “GM Mark of Excellence” logos from its Buick, Cadillac, Chevy and GMC models. Reason being? GM wants to shift the focus to its other marques. According to research done by the auto giant, customers tend to gravitate more toward their individual brands than those of the parent company. “What we’re seeing is the GM brand gets dinged big time in terms of considering a GM vehicle,” said General Motors executive Mike DiGiovanni. The GM logo is set to start disappearing immediately.

First it was the 76ers. Then the Toronto Maple Leafs. Now it’s the Ottawa Senators– or at least their fans anyway. Graphic designer Jacob Barrette has started an Internet petition lobbying for a more vintage-like logo as a way to connect modern day fans with the history of the team.

That sounds much like what the Maple Leafs and 76ers want. And after a disappointing 2008-09 season, maybe fans think a new look for the Senators also means a new attitude — one that will be followed by a more promising season.

So far, the petition has close to 1,000 signatures.

…at least that’s what Rush Limbaugh thinks. Here’s an excerpt from the Los Angeles Times: “Over the last few days, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) has repeatedly accused people at a recent protest against President Obama’s healthcare reform of wearing swastikas and SS symbols — a claim that was later bolstered by a series of photographs.

“I think they’re AstroTurf, you be the judge,” said Pelosi. “They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on healthcare.”

Perennial Obama critic and conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh was quick to respond to the accusations, arguing today on his radio show that it was in fact the Democrats who were using Nazi symbolism to advance their agenda. He cited a post on the conservative blog Sweetness & Light that compares Obama’s new healthcare logo — a combination of his campaign logo and the ancient Greek symbol of medicine — to the Nazi swastika symbol.

“They accuse of us being Nazis, and Obama’s got a healthcare logo that’s right out of Adolf Hitler’s playbook,” said Limbaugh.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Does the new healthcare logo bare any resemblance to the Nazi symbol shown above? Do you agree with Rush Limbaugh when he says that it is the Democrats who were ‘using Nazi symbolism to advance their agenda?’ Leave your thoughts below.

Looking to re-brand itself and stand tall amongst the big guys (i.e. Paris, London, Sydney et. al), the city of Melbourne decided it needed a new logo to replace the old one. The new logo, designed by strategic brand consulting and design firm Landor, cost the city just under $200,000. That’s a lot for a logo, especially one that suspiciously resembles the Merchant Logix logo designed some time ago by Canadian-based designer Raja Sandhu.

You’d think a giant like Landor would have been a bit more careful. Unfortunately for the city of Melbourne, its attempt at finding an “identity all its own” was not so successful.
