Bluetooth is a wireless technology that enables the exchange of data over short distances between devices like mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers, digital cameras and video games. It creates Personal Area Networks (PANs) with a high level of security and deals with the problem of synchronization. The word “Bluetooth” is inspired from the name of a 10th century Danish monarch, King Harald Bluetooth who was known for uniting Scandinavian Europe during the period when the region was worn out by wars and feuding clans.

In 1994, the Swedish Company, Ericcson initiated the Bluetooth Technology movement. Later in 1998, 5 big companies including IBM, Intel, Nokia, Toshiba and Ericsson, founded the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) with the aim to further develop the technology. Today, the Bluetooth SIG is responsible for promoting and supporting research and development in Bluetooth technology.

Many developments have been made since Bluetooth was first introduced. In 2008, Bluetooth was the first wireless technology to ship almost two billion products over a span of 10 years.
