Flyer Design

Flyers are a marketing “must.”  Most businesses heavily rely on flyers as a part of their marketing campaign.  Although flyers differ greatly depending on the purpose, there are some basic steps you can take to ensure the best quality flyer design when you create your marketing publications.

  • Consistency throughout publications.  This will help you brand your company and will increase the chance of recall by your prospective readers.  Consistency in your flyer design will create a smooth seamless feel.
  • Clear fonts.  It is important that the text is clear and easy to read in your flyer design.  Use the bold or thick fonts to attract attention and to make a statement.
  • Simplistic. Avoid clutter or busy designs.  You want to be sure that your prospective readers can read it, and stay interested.  It is much too distracting to have flyer designs with a lot of text, graphics, designs and colors.  Be sure that you establish your motive with the flyer, and focus only on that.
  • Bright colors attract readers.  If you are placing your flyer on a bulletin board, the brighter, more eye-catching flyers are the ones that get viewed.  Plain white paper is not recommended for flyers of this nature.  They are easy to miss, and easy to throw away.  When choosing a flyer color, be sure that you are consistent with your company and true to the industry.  Bright colors can often look unprofessional, so choose colors that are true to the integrity of your company while still drawing attention.
  • Catchy. Most people only glance over a flyer for a few seconds.  Get to the point as quickly and as clearly as possible in your flyer design.  You do not want to lose your reader before they have been introduced to what it is that you are advertising.  Whether it be catchy text at the top, or a catchy graphic, it is important to create an interest with your reader.

When creating publications for your company, it is important to convey a certain level of professionalism.  Remember, you are representing your company; therefore you want to be sure that it is in the very best taste.  In any marketing campaign, you want to establish your purpose and your target audience before designing your publications.  Consistency is very important in any marketing campaign.  You want to be sure that your flyer design appropriately represents your company, your product or service.

Consistency

It is important that your flyer designs stay consistent with your company, industry and business purpose.  Company branding is crucial in the marketing aspect of any company, and consistency is the key to branding.  If you stay consistent in your design with color schemes, logos, company model, etc, you will have more success in branding your company.  You want people to see the flyer and know exactly who you are and what you do.  Branding is everything.  You flyer design can be a powerful tool in company branding.  Flyers and other publications must stay consistent with all other marketing avenues.

Simple

Your flyer design must be aesthetically pleasing.  Negative space or white space on your flyer does 2 things.  First, it is easy to look at.  You do not want people to view your flyer and be so overwhelmed with text and graphics that they don’t actually read any of it.  Simple flyers are most effective.  Resist the temptation to fill every last inch of space with information or graphics.  It is overwhelming, and distracting.  If you are selling a product, you don’t want to put a lot of information about other services offered.  Too much information is very distracting and will not be effective.    Once you have determined what you want to accomplish with your flyer, you can create a flyer design accordingly.

Where Do I Start My Flyer Design?

Do-It-Yourselfers will often create their flyer design using a program that is familiar to them.  Many software programs offer flyer templates.  You may use PowerPoint, Word, Illustrator, Quark, Photoshop and others to create a flyer design.  If you don’t already know what you want the look to be, use magazines or other advertisements to get ideas.  Look at flyers or ads that you have received and see what you like about them and what you didn’t.  Were they interesting to you?  Did you read the whole thing?  Be sure to always include contact information for the company on flyers.  This seems simple and obvious, but can be overlooked very easily.

There are also many companies that will create your flyer design for you.  Graphic design companies are often used when designing logos, and other marketing publications.  As mentioned above, consistency is important in branding and creating a trust between you and your target audience or prospective clients.  Consistency is something that can be achieved when going through a company for all of your marketing ads, such as mailers, flyers, signs, letterhead, etc.  This will be a bit more costly, but will be the most professional route to go.
